It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, Bob Vellner on February 2nd, 2021 just 4 days short of his 91st birthday. Bob was born in Camrose, AB and was raised in Wetaskiwin before moving to Red Deer in 1951 where he joined his father Henry as partner in their General Motors dealership Vellner Motors. Bob was an astute and highly respected businessman throughout his life reveling in identifying and overcoming the various challenges presented by the variety of businesses he was involved in. He especially loved the RV business which he entered into in 1957 and today Vellner Leisure Products is proud to still be operating as a single lot family owned dealership, moving toward its 4th generation.

Bob had a zest for adventure, taking many family RV trips to Mazatlán, Mexico. He was also an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, and frequent trips to the West coast to go fishing. It became something of a tradition for the children to take a turn going out to the coast to go salmon fishing with “Grandpa”. Bob was always drawn to the water and eventually even got involved in the Houseboat, marina, and marine service industry in Sicamous B.C. Three Buoys Houseboat and Marina. He has a cabin in Sicamous where his family would spend many summers.
Family was of high importance for Bob, He and his wife Loree would often organize vacations to bring their children and grand children together. Whether it be off to the mountains for a ski adventure, or all the way to the Caribbean for a sailing trip he always found a way to bring the whole crew together. No matter where the destination Bob’s signature move was to round up a bunch of seemingly random ingredients and cook the best meal you had ever had. He would then regale the family with some old stories. Like the time he was hauling a trailer back from the factory, had to pull over for a rest, then woke up driving and was 50KM down the road. When he was a young man and had a friend working at the Coca Cola plant, who he would get to pre bottle Rum and Cokes (what an entrepreneur). Or stories about his father’s old wolf dog Silver a Veteran and war hero, going nuts and chewing up his brother in laws arm and him trying to wrestle it off. Always using the patented Bob Vellner story telling method of using every character in the stories first and last name, whether you knew them or not.
We are left with many wonderful memories, like this story from one of his grand children:
I always enjoyed hanging with my Grandpa Bob. I have fond memories of our endless games of crib at Mara lake, getting together for big family gatherings, even sailing in the Carribean, but I think my favourite memory with him is of our fishing trip to Vancouver island when I was 14. There are few things like being out on a boat for bringing the stories out of people, and my Grandpa sure had a lot of them! It wasn’t the fish we caught, or the beautiful coastline we explored that I remember most, but just sitting out on the boat and taking in the stories as my dad and Grandpa Bob reminisced over old memories, some of them about fishing, but mostly about life and travel and whatever popped up. I was surprised at how little I knew about this man before he was “my Grandpa”. But I guess that’s the thing about grandparents. They are notoriously good at always making you the center of attention. He always had. But, now we were out in his element, connecting over something he’d always loved, and I got to see a whole new side of him, a man full of experience and adventures. That was the best catch of the trip by far. To be honest, I was never really much of a fishing guy. I’m still not. However, I do believe that you can learn a lot about a person if you’re stuck on a boat with them for long enough. I’m so thankful that I had the chance to do that with my Grandpa Bob, and that I got to be a small part of his great story.
